Designing your own will allow you to create a ring that has personal meaning and will suit your taste exactly. When designing your ring, be sure to find a reputable jeweler to construct it.

1. Decide if you want to incorporate other stones. You may want to feature only amethyst in your ring or you may want to include another type of stone, such as a diamond or aquamarine. If amethyst is your birthstone, perhaps you'll want to include the birthstone of your future husband in your wedding ring if it complements the purple amethyst.

2. Look through magazines. Get an idea for the design of your ring by looking at samples in magazines. You may wish to model your ring from a design that catches your eye in an advertisement or you may want to combine different features from different rings to create a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry.

3. Determine the layout. Decide how you want the stones to be displayed in your ring. Perhaps you would like 3 square-cut amethyst stones set along the center of the band. If you've opted to use a combination of stones -- diamond and amethyst, for example -- you may want to have an infinity band created, in which the stones wrap around the entire ring, alternating in pattern from diamond to amethyst.

4. Choose a metal. You'll have to decide on a type of metal to support your stones. Some options include yellow gold, white gold and platinum. The metal you choose depends on your taste, as well as your budget, since some metals are more expensive than others.
