How to Install K98 Mauser Floor Plate Capture Screws

Mauser K98 rifles were the primary battle rifles of the German army during World War II. The original rifles used capture screws, or locking screws, to keep the magazine floor plate securely in place. The floor plate is the metal plate on the bottom of your rifle on the underside of the magazine (removing the floor plate gives you access to the magazine). Capture screws have three grooves milled into the sides of the heads of the screws. The grooves allow a secondary screw to be installed next to the capture screw, firmly holding it in place. Many Mauser rifles have had the capture screws replaced with standard screws, which you can easily restore to their original design by installing capture screws. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

With a flat head screwdriver, remove the screw from the front end of the magazine floor plate.

    • 2

Screw in the capture screw into the larger screw hole. Line up one of the milled grooves with the smaller screw hole so that the groove completes a round screw hole for the smaller screw.

Tips & Warnings
