How to Remove Sound Deadening Material

Although a lot of cars come from the factory with some form of sound deadening material, it's often not enough to quiet down the noise levels enough for many car stereo aficionados. These people prefer the sound to be as dead as possible, requiring the use of aftermarket sound deadening materials. These are based on tar and stick to the chassis of the car easily, but taking them off can be a bit more difficult. However, if you want to remove the sound deadening material from your car, you can do so with some basic tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on the gloves. Find the loosest edge on the sound deadening material that you can begin to work from. Heat up the edge of the sound deadening material with the head gun.

    • 2

Insert the plastic putty knife between the car and the sound deadening material and lift the material up off the car. Keep heating the material with the heat gun in one hand as you roll the sound deadening material off the floor, just as you would roll up a large rug, with the putty knife. If necessary, use pliers to pull the sound deadening material up from the floor.

    • 3

Apply the tar and grease remover to the car's sheetmetal, which might be the floorboard, inside of the doors, or anywhere else that you found the sound deadener. Wipe off any residual tar from the sound deadening material using the paper towels.
