Planning a road trip is easier when you obtain state road maps of all the states you'll be going through before you leave. This helps you be aware of new thoroughfares and points of interest. You can obtain these before you depart, or you can grab one on the road in a pinch.
Before You Go
Contact the tourism departments in the states in which you'll be traveling. They usually will mail you a free state road map. If you're a AAA member, visit a local office to get a TripTik travel planner, which highlights your best route across the state in which you'll be traveling. You can create your own printable TripTik online, with suggestions for place to eat, sleep and get gas.
An easy way to snag road maps while on the road is to stop at a rest area along the route. You'll usually find a road map for the state in which you're traveling among the brochures, and the attendant there will help you with any travel questions.
