How to Paint Patio Door Grids
It can seem daunting to paint the grid in your patio door. After all, the lines are often small, and the door is expensive and presumably fragile. However, many find this project easier than painting the interior room on the opposite side of that door. The trick is to prep the area and the door for easy cleanup, and to protect the glass as much as possible. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Identify the material your patio door is made of. If it's made of something other than wood, you'll need to buy paint that's rated for that material. Otherwise, the paint will flake off once it dries. Some materials, especially vinyl and plastic, shouldn't be painted at all.
-
2
Lay down drop cloths on the ground in front of your patio door.

3
Scrape off loose paint, if any, using your sandpaper. You don't have to remove all the paint, just sections that are in danger of falling off.
-
4
Run a line of masking tape along either side of the grid sections of your patio door frame. This will protect the glass from paint as you apply it.
-
5
Apply paint to the door in long, even lines. For narrow sections of the door grid, run the brush so it's parallel to the line you're painting.
-
6
Wipe off any paint that gets on the glass, using your shop rag. If you get it while it's still wet, cleaning it up is remarkably easy.
-
7
Wait for the paint to dry. Apply additional coats as necessary.

Tips & Warnings
If any paint dries on your glass (you may discover some during cleanup, especially under the tape), you can scrape it off easily with a box knife, or even your fingernail.
