How to Increase Shutter Speed on an Olympus Stylus 1010

The shutter speed controls the amount of light in a photo.

The Olympus Stylus 1010 is a 10.1-megapixel digital camera useful for amateur photography. Just like most consumer digital cameras, the shutter speed is not user-adjustable. The camera automatically chooses the shutter speed regardless of what you want. While this is convenient for most people, there are situations where you might want to increase the shutter speed. Understand how the Stylus 1010's automatic mechanism works and the shooting options available to increase the camera's shutter speed.

Instructions

1. Press the power button on the top-right portion of the Stylus 1010 to turn the camera on.

2. Turn the mode dial to select the camera icon. Look for this icon between "AUTO" and "SCN." In this mode, the camera will automatically choose the best aperture and shutter speed values.

   The Stylus 1010 automatically increases the shutter speed in sunny weather.

   Increase the amount of light in the photo. If shooting indoors, turn as many lights on as possible and don't turn off the flash. Shoot outside in direct sunlight if possible. Hold down the shutter button halfway to view the new shutter speed.

   The camera automatically decreases the shutter speed in low-light situations, increasing the amount of light on the image sensor to make up for the lack of light. When there is a large amount of light, the camera automatically increases the shutter speed to decrease the amount of light on the sensor. This ensures that your shots come out correctly regardless of the light level.

4. 

   A fast shutter speed is necessary to capture fast action without motion blur.

   Turn the camera dial to "SCN" mode and choose "SPORT" on the screen as an alternate means of increasing the shutter speed. Cameras need fast shutter speeds to capture quick action at sporting events, so changing to this mode will force the camera to increase the shutter speed.
