DIY Fireplace Draft Stopper

A fireplace can bring warmth into a home and create a wonderful place for the family to sit together. An inescapable aspect of having a fireplace in your home is the fact that you are creating an opening directly to the outdoors through the chimney shaft. This can create an unwanted draft and make loud, unpleasant noises. You can make your own fireplace draft stopper that is not only attractive but will stop both the draft and noise from getting into your home. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Hold a piece of foam insulation board up to the opening of your fireplace.

    • 2

Cut the board with a utility knife so that it is exactly the size of the opening, except for the top edge, which should be 1/4 inch shorter to allow you to remove it from the fireplace.

    • 3

Cover the foam board with a piece of material of your choosing. The material should go over the front face of the board with a bit extra folded over to the backside of the board.

    • 4

Staple the material in place with a staple gun. Secure the material on the back of the board so no staples or edges of the material can be seen from the front.

    • 5

Hold the material taut as you staple it so that it doesn't sag when you're finished.

    • 6

Fit the board into the opening of the fireplace. Work slowly to get the entire piece in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't use a sheer material or you will be able to see the foam through it.

  • Do not light a fire with the draft stopper in place.
