1
Purchase a raccoon trap. Raccoon traps are available at most home and garden stores. The trap should be at least 12 x 12 x 32 inches. Note that raccoons are classified as furbearers in Indiana, and, under state law, landowners or their tenants may take furbearing animals at any time if they are causing damage, according to Purdue University.
-
2
Place the raccoon trap in your attic and place a piece of bait such as cat food, canned tuna or fruit in the trap.
-
-
3
Relocate the trapped raccoon as far from your home as possible. Keep in mind that under Indiana law, trapped furbearers must be relocated within the county of capture or euthanized.
-
4
Contact the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and report the trapped and relocated raccoon. Not reporting the trapping and relocation of a raccoon is illegal under Indiana law.

Deny access to the attic. Cover chimney openings with a heavy metal screen or with a sheet metal cap. Remove tree limbs overhanging the roof, seal entrances into the attic and replace damaged boards.
