How to Make a Wood Gun

How to Make a Wood Gun thumbnail
Practice your woodworking skills by transforming an ordinary piece of wood into a toy gun.

Wooden guns are unique because they are both functional and artistic. If you've always wanted to create a wooden gun for you or your child to enjoy but have been intimidated by the task, have no fear. This wooden gun recipe involves shaping a gun from a solid piece of wood rather than assembling small pieces of wood together, making it a task that can be accomplished by even beginning wood workers. When you are shaping the gun, you can show off your woodworking skills by creating ornate details in the wood grain.

Things You'll Need

  • Piece of wood
  • Jigsaw
  • Cordless drill and bits
  • Rasp
  • Sand paper (coarse and fine)
  • Drop cloth
  • Wood stain

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a pattern resembling a gun onto the stock piece of wood, the size of which depends on the type of gun you want to make. But as an example, an appropriate wood measurement is 2 inches by 6 inches by 16 inches. The pattern should include a gun nuzzle, handle and trigger ring (at first this will look like a round bulge on the inside corner between the nuzzle and the handle).

    • 2

Cut along the gun pattern using the jigsaw. Once you have cut out the gun, remove the excess wood.

    • 3

Load a large drill bit into the cordless drill. Drill a hole in the center of your wood gun's trigger ring. Don't worry if the hole is too small at first, you can always widen it with a rasp.

    • 4

Sand away the square edges of the wood gun using a rasp until they are rounded into the shape you desire. Change the angle of the rasp as you sand the wood away to create an even, yet rounded look. Expand the hole of the trigger ring using the rasp, if desired.

    • 5

Sand the entire wood gun using coarse sandpaper. Make sure that you remove all slivers or blemishes with the coarse sand paper.

    • 6

Sand the gun using fine sandpaper until you create a smooth, even finish.

    • 7

Prepare the wood stain according to the stain's instructions. Place the wood gun on its side on top of a drop cloth. Paint the stain onto the wood gun in a thin, even coat. Allow the stain to dry completely before turning over the gun to paint the other side.

    • 8

Paint the tip of the gun's nuzzle with florescent orange paint.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always paint the tip of a toy gun (or the entire gun) florescent orange.
