How to Date a German 98 Kar
The original German KAR98 and KAR98A models are perhaps some of the most infamous weapons still in existence today. Starting in 1935 and continuing to the end of World War II, the KAR98 was the main infantry weapon of the German army. When the Nazi party took control of Germany, swastikas and eagles were engraved into the gun metal by the companies tasked with producing the weapons. Today, the weapons are little more than collectors items and curiosity pieces, though a few rifles are still used by amateur shootists and history buffs as target weapons.

1
Unload your KAR and set the safety to "on." This should always be your first step when performing any task with a firearm, even if it's something as simple as looking it over for a serial number or manufacturing date.
-
2
Examine the top of the receiver, immediately in front of where the bullets are loaded into the weapon.

-
3
Locate the lower set of numbers. This is the manufacture year of the KAR 98. Depending on where it was manufactured, it will either have a set of letters, followed by two numbers standing for the manufacture year (43 for 1943, for instance), or the full manufacture date stamped into the metal.
