How Can I Add a Second Driver Onto an HP USB Virtual Printer Port?

Companies with a shared Hewlett-Packard printer often find a virtual printing port comes in handy. If you connect all your computers to the same virtual port, it acts as if you have each connected directly to the HP printer. All of HP's network-compatible printers include this capability. HP makes adding these ports relatively easy, but for more complex printer configurations, you need several drivers. For instance, you might network two HP printers together, each requiring its own driver. The Hewlett-Packard website offers free downloads for all printer drivers.

Instructions

    • 1

Download the second driver from HP, if you have not done so already. The HP support website contains them all (see Resources). Click the "Download drivers and software (and firmware)" button and enter the printer model.

    • 2

Click "Start" and select "Control Panel."

    • 3

Click "View Devices and Printers" under "Hardware and Sound."

    • 4

Right-click your HP printer and select "Properties."

    • 5

      Click the "Ports" tab.

    • 6

Select the virtual USB port. It will have the label "USB001" or something similar.

    • 7

      Click "Configure Port."

    • 8

Click "Browse" in the second box under "Drivers" and select the HP driver you wish to add. You should see the existing HP driver in the first box.

    • 9

Click "OK" to return to the Printer Properties window. You will now see two separate HP drivers listed.
