How to Paint Formica Kitchen Counters

Although the Formica Group manufactures several different types of countertops, the trade name "Formica" is commonly associated with a plastic laminate used to surface kitchen tables and counters. You can update your old Formica counters by painting them. For the best results, however, use a paint designated specifically for countertops, available at home and garden centers.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the Formica counter thoroughly with an all-purpose cleaner.

    • 2

Sand the entire surface of the counter with medium-grit sandpaper. Wipe off the dust with a damp microfiber cloth and allow the counter to dry.

    • 3

Mask the edges around the counter with painter's tape. Make sure the tape lies completely flat against the surface.

    • 4

Stir the countertop paint well and pour it into a roller pan. Coat the roller with paint and roll it evenly over the counter surface. Use a brush to paint any areas that can't be reached by the roller. Allow to dry for one hour.

    • 5

Apply a second coat of countertop paint, if necessary. Allow the paint to dry for three days before use.

Tips & Warnings

  • Clean the painted surface as usual, with an all-purpose cleaner.

  • Ventilate the kitchen before painting by opening all of the windows.

  • Do not use abrasive cleaners, cut directly into the counter or place hot pots on the counter without a trivet.
