How to Shim a Combination Lock

How to Shim a Combination Lock thumbnail
Don't break your lock open; try using a padlock shim first.

Combination locks may be ideal for protecting your property, but it is possible for you to forget the combination. This is especially likely if you use several different locks, or have not used your lock in a long time. If you cannot open your combination lock, consider using a padlock shim to unlock it. Although shims are usually used to open padlocks, they can also be used to unlock combination locks. Shims work when they are inserted between the shaft's shackle, then turned. This causes the lock to open. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the combination lock in one hand, and the large shim in the other. A large shim is recommended due to the depth of the latch that holds the shackle in place. Smaller shims are not able to reach the latch.

    • 2

Slide the shim onto the right side of the shackle, then turn it gently until it slips between the shackle and the body of the lock.

    • 3

Twist and wiggle the shim, while pushing it slightly to the side and downward. Because you cannot see what is happening inside the lock, it may take some time before the lock releases.

    • 4

Pull the shackle open when you feel the latch release, then remove the shim.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the shim pops back up when turned, reinsert it and try again.
