Not only is the cake the dessert for the reception, it also serves as a beautiful centerpiece for the entire celebration. Wedding cakes can be expensive if they are purchased from a professional baker. It is possible to buy a plain wedding cake and decorate it yourself. Determine the theme, color and overall design that needs to be achieved when decorating the wedding cake and adding jewelry. There are a variety of styles of cake jewelry that can be incorporated into the design of the wedding cake. Determine what decorations are desired before purchasing the supplies.

Visit a local grocery store and purchase containers of edible pearl beads, which are available in a variety of sizes and colors. The beads can be used to decorate the sides of the cake in addition to creating a border at the base of each of the cake layers.

Consider purchasing a plain plastic monogram wedding cake topper from a local craft store. Use a hot glue gun to add plastic jewels to both sides of the cake topper in order to decorate the centerpiece of the cake. Monogram wedding toppers can easily be personalized to match the theme of the cake.

Decide whether to use real or artificial flowers to create a wedding cake topper and to decorate the sides of the cake. Real flowers can be cut and applied directly to the top as well as the sides of the cake in the chosen arrangement or design. However, it is important that the real flowers are clean, nontoxic and pesticide free.

Make an artificial wedding cake topper by hot gluing the flowers to a cardboard base. The cardboard base should be hidden using flowers and leaves. Once the topper is finished, it can be placed on top of the wedding cake and is easy to remove when the cake is being cut and served.
