How to Repair a 1990 Ford F150 Power Window Motor

While Ford does not offer repair parts for the 1990 F150 window motor, you can replace the motor itself with far less effort. The window motor transforms electrical energy from the power window circuit to kinetic energy it uses to move the window regulator gear. The regulator then moves the window itself. Because electric motors can short circuit or seize internally, you can expect to replace one or more of them in the first 200,000 miles of service. Anyone with good auto-repair abilities can perform this repair.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the F150's door containing the bad window motor. Pry that door's power window and lock switches out of the panel using the trim tool. Disconnect both of the power switches from the wiring harnesses manually, and set them somewhere safe.

    • 2

Remove the screws holding the F150's door panel to the door skin using the Phillips screwdriver. Place all the screws with the power switches within easy reach for reinstallation.

    • 3

Slide the tip of the trim tool between the lower, trailing edge of the door panel and the door skin. Pry the door panel off the door at that point, then work your way around the door panel's perimeter to pry it completely off the door. Lift the door panel high enough to clear the lock button before removing it from the F150's door by hand.

    • 4

Push the window glass to the top of the door by hand. Tape the glass in place using packing tape to stop it from sliding back down into the door.

    • 5

Pull the power window wiring harness connector out of the faulty window motor by hand. Remove the two retaining bolts holding the motor to the regulator and F150's door using your socket set.

    • 6

Remove the F150's old window motor by hand, and replace it with the new one. Bolt the F150's new power window motor to the door and regulator using the socket set. Plug the wiring harness connector into the new window motor by hand.

    • 7

Put the door panel back on the F150's door by reversing your removal procedure. Get all the tape off the door before using the new motor.
