How to Teach a Child to Read With Flash Cards
Learning to read is an important step in a child's development. Reading allows children to interact with the world around them and is critical in their success as students. You can get your kids started early on reading by using flash cards. These activities can reinforce reading skills and give your child an advantage once she hits a period in school where reading becomes a central focus.

1
Pick up or create some flash cards with common elementary-level words. These flash cards should be colorful and engaging to keep the activity fun.
-
2
Schedule a special time each day to work with your child. Working with flash cards is the same as working with anything else, in that consistency delivers better results.
-
-
3
Start slowly. Ask your child to sound out the word on the card, or use an image to help associate the word with a real object.
-

Continue to work on the same set of vocabulary words until your child can quickly identify 10 to 20 words without having to sound them out. Once the child has a good understanding, move to other words.

Tips & Warnings
Add difficulty by covering the images on your flash cards and asking your child to read the word without any additional help. This helps to ensure he is learning the words and not the pictures.
