How to Become a Park Ranger in Virginia
The Virginia Department of Conservation & Recreation operates Virginia's state park system. Its mission, in part, is to "conserve, protect, and enhance their lands... (and promote) the stewardship and enjoyment of natural, cultural and outdoor recreational resources, and ensure the safety of Virginia's dams." The job of a park ranger encompasses all these duties through land management, volunteer management, and public education.

Become certified in CPR and first aid. This is a common requirement when working with the public as park rangers often do.

Obtain a Virginia driver's license which the state of Virginia requires for employment.

Get a Water Operator Class 4 certification, if required. This is necessary if the job duties include operation of water, wastewater and/or water reclamation facilities. Applications and exams are administered through PSI Exams Online.

Get your high school diploma. This is the minimum educational requirement to apply for a park ranger position in Virginia.

Get a college education that includes coursework and/or a degree in biology, zoology, environmental science, natural resources and/or land use. Although this may not be specifically required in the job posting, it will help you stand out from the competition. It will also you help you understand how to protect and use natural resources, a primary function of any park ranger. If the position calls for a wastewater or water facilities certification, then you will need education in water management.

Volunteer at a local park, zoo or wildlife center. Any experience with working outdoors and with nature will help you compete when seeking a park ranger job and give you valuable experience to use on the job.

Apply to work as a Natural Resource Specialist. This is the official job title of park rangers in Virginia. Job openings are posted on the Virginia Department of Conservation & Recreation website. You can also contact any specific park for which you wish to work as openings occur.
