How to Make a Barney Birthday Cake

With a Barney cake at the centerpiece, you're sure to have a happy time.

The big purple dinosaur known as Barney has long been a popular figure for children. When you are baking a cake for a child who likes watching Barney movies or reading his books, create a cake that looks like the dinosaur. Making a Barney cake is easy enough if you use a large picture of the cartoon figure. There are several different ways to make Barney cakes.

Things You'll Need

• 13 x 9 rectangular cake
• Cake platter
• Large Barney picture
• Serrated knife
• Purple frosting
• Green frosting
• Pastry bag
• Fine tip
• Black frosting
• White frosting
• Barney pan
• Square cake
• Barney figurines

Instructions

1. Place a rectangular cake on a large cake platter. Find a picture of Barney in a coloring book, on a poster or online that is nearly the size of your cake. Cut Barney out of the picture so that you are left with the outline of his body. Place the picture on top of the cake. Cut the cake around the outline with a serrated knife so that you are left with a cake shaped like Barney. Discard the other cake scraps or save them for snacking. Frost all but the center of Barney's stomach with purple frosting. Fill in his stomach section that is unfrosted with green icing. Place a fine tip inside a pastry bag and fill the bag with black frosting. Using the picture of Barney as a reference, pipe on details, such as Barney's outlining his arms, drawing on his nose and other features. Clean the pastry bag and tip and fill the bag with white frosting. Pipe on Barney's eyes and teeth with the white icing. Clean the pastry bag and tip and fill the bag with white frosting. 2. Purchase a cake pan shaped like Barney. Wilton sells such a pan and you can find it online or in a specialty baking store. Bake a cake inside the pan and then turn it out onto a cake platter. Not only will the cake be shaped like Barney, it is made so that the cake creates a 3-D Barney image. Use purple, green, yellow and white frosting to decorate the cake for the birthday boy or girl.

3. Use a square sheet cake to create a birthday cake that features Barney and his friends that are featured on his television shows and movies. Bake the cake and place it on a cake platter. Frost it using purple icing. Purchase plastic figurines shaped like Barney and his friends. Thoroughly wash the figurines and place them on the cake. Use green frosting to write a happy birthday message onto the cake.
