How to Make an Adult Angel Costume
A great costume is key when playing any role, for whatever reason. Be it for Halloween, a school play or a community production, the better the costume, the more believable the character. The idea of creating an angel costume for an adult may seem overwhelming at first, given the delicate image that an angel possesses, but in reality the task can be quite enjoyable. Conceptualizing your angel costume is the most important part of the process. Once you've got your angel image in mind, you'll be well on your way to creating a beautiful angel costume.

1
Conceptualize the type of angel costume you'd like to make. Would you like it to be realistic and classical, all white with a glowing halo above your head? Or would you prefer something more flashy and fashionable, perhaps shorter with hints of metallic silver highlighting the garment? You could even choose to make a "black angel" costume, complete with a shredded dark dress and dragon wings in place of angel wings. Choose an angel image that suits the statement you're trying to make with your costume.

Take a trip to your local fabric store and select a pattern for your angel costume. You'll need to follow the pattern while sewing the dress. Check your pattern for sizing and measurement guides to ensure you sew a costume that will actually fit. Most patterns are priced minimally and come packaged at any craft or fabric store. You also have the option of selecting a pattern online, printing it out and following it.

Buy the fabric you plan on using to make your angel costume at the same time. Verify on the pattern's package or website to ensure that you purchase enough fabric to complete the costume. The type of fabric you buy will depend on the type of angel you want to be. For a classical angel costume, choose light fabrics, such as matte satin and chiffon. For a more fashionable angel costume, choose satin, tulle or even a white and silver brocade pattern. Use your imagination and be creative. Browse the fabric store until you find a fabric that really appeals to you.

Lay out your fabric upside down on a flat surface and ensure that there are no wrinkles in it. Iron it first if necessary. Cut out the pieces of your purchased or printed pattern and place them on the upside-down fabric. Cut the fabric in the same shape as each pattern piece, leaving a bit extra around the edges to account for any possible mistakes. (Keep in mind that the excess will be on the inside of your costume and not visible to anyone.) Sew the pieces together one by one and then turn the garment inside out to reveal your sewn costume.

5
Add accents to your angel costume in a variety of places. Choose a belt in a contrasting material, or add inexpensive jewels or baubles to the neckline, sleeves or hemline of the costume. The type of accents you choose should reflect your angel costume's image. For a classical look, pearls work well. For a fashion-forward impression, use rhinestones or other glittery items. For a dark angel costume, add black gems or faux metal spikes.

Put the finishing touches on your angel costume by adding a headpiece and wings of some sort. These items can be purchased at a very minimal cost from any craft or dollar store. A halo with an attached headband works well for almost any type of angel costume, and the same accents that you add to the costume can also be added to the halo to created a homogenous look. Wings are important as well, and the types of wings available differ greatly. Choose a set of wings with elastic arm bands to ensure comfort. Don't forget that regardless of the type of angel costume you choose, you'll be expected to shine -- all angels do!
