How to choose dance classes for kids
Dance is the art of merging music and movement. Exploring the world of dance allows people to increase their kinesthetic awareness and an understanding of music. Dance classes for kids have many advantages. Students learn discipline, hard work and how to express themselves gracefully. The right dance class should have teachers with a background in many different fields of dance and training to work with children.

Contact local area ballet schools. Many areas have regional ballet companies. Companies often have affiliated ballet schools where students are training in classic dance. Ballet companies also offer classes in other forms of dance such as jazz and modern plus classes in music appreciation. Find out what types of dance classes for kids are offered. Some companies allow students as young as three to attend basic movement classes. Other companies may require students to perform an audition and demonstrate some basic dance training before they can be admitted to classes.

Speak with school officials. Find out the size of the classes being offered, the background of the teachers and the content being taught. Learn what types of lessons are offered. Some schools provide basic lessons to any kid. Others may offer more advanced training. Investigate when and where the dance classes for kids are held. Most dance classes are held in a large space to allow students to move about freely. The floor should not be too hard to help students avoid injury.

Speak with your child. Your child may enjoy classical ballet or love modern stage jazz music. Your child may also wish to explore his or her ethnic heritage and prefer to take classes in Irish Step Dancing, for instance. Ask the dance school if your child can attend a few lessons first to see if they like the class.

Investigate area athletic facilities. Many athletic disciplines draw on dance theory to help students learn to move more gracefully. A local area gymnastics company may also offer dance lessons for kids in combination with other lessons in gymnastics. A YMCA may have dance teachers on staff. A child can combine their love of dance with their love of other athletic endeavors as well.
