How to Position a Splint for a Tennis Elbow

Tennis elbow is a condition in which the tendons surrounding the elbow become seriously inflamed as the result of overuse. The condition is common among tennis players, and other racket sport athletes, but can be caused by other activities, as well. If allowed to persist untreated, patients may experience a loss of motion in the elbow joint, and chronic pain. Treatment usually begins with the application of a splint, or counterforce brace, designed to support the injured tendons, in combination with exercises to strengthen the weak tissue. A correctly positioned splint can significantly decrease healing time.

Instructions

    • 1

Unfasten the Velcro straps and loosen the brace. The splint should be opened wide enough that your hand can slide into it easily, without restriction.

    • 2

Slide the brace on. It should slide over the hand and up onto the forearm near the elbow.

    • 3

Hold your arm straight during the process of positioning the splint. It is important that it remain in a fixed position during the adjustment process.

    • 4

Align the plastic boning in the splint along the side of the arm, even with the thumb.

    • 5

Position the top edge of the brace approximately 2 in. below the elbow on the forearm.

    • 6

Fasten the brace with the Velcro. The brace should feel snug, but should not restrict blood flow. If your fingers begin to feel numb or tingly you should loosen the Velcro fasteners immediately.

Tips & Warnings

  • Braces are available in multiple sizes and designs. Make sure that you have selected a brace that will fit you appropriately.

  • Using a splint long term can cause dependence. The tendons surrounding the elbow should be weaned off of split support as soon as possible to prevent a developing weakness in the surrounding tissues.
