How to Install a Fuel Tank in Vehicles

by Contributing WriterUpdated June 12, 2017

It is important to look Vehicles the ground where you park your car routinely. If the Vehicles has a fuel leak, you can see it on the pavement-a rainbow will appear on top the gasoline. Gasoline is very combustible, so get the car to a mechanic as soon as possible.

Under The Hood:

How to Install a Fuel Tank in a Nissan Altima

Disconnect the negative battery cable before you begin, and be sure that the tank is depressurized. Drain the fuel from the tank into a suitable gas can.

Remove the access plate to the fuel pump, located under the rear seat. Label all of the fuel hoses and electrical harnesses with a marker to make it easier to replace them when you've finished, and disconnect them.

Raise the rear of the vehicle with a jack and support it safely on a jack stand. Block the rear wheels to keep them from rolling. Label all fuel lines to make them easier to replace. If your Nissan Altima is a 240SX model, disconnect the exhaust tube, differential carrier, rear suspension member and drive shaft.

Disconnect the vent hose and fuel filler hose, and take off the tank's protector assembly.

Support the tank with a floor jack and remove the retaining bolts on the fuel tank band. Carefully lower the tank out of the vehicle.

Put the new tank on the floor jack and raise it carefully into the vehicle. Reconnect all the fuel tank and engine components in the reverse order in which they were removed, and lower the rear of the vehicle.

Add a few gallons of fuel to the tank, repressurize the system and check it for leaks.

Items you will need

  • Gas can

  • Marker

  • Jack and jack stand

  • Wheel blocks

  • Floor jack

  • Replacement fuel tank

Turn off the negative battery terminal on the car's battery. Remove the fuel tank filler cap and insert a siphoning hose to empty the remaining fuel into a gas container.

Disconnect all fuel lines and hoses on and around the fuel tank. Use a screwdriver to remove the tank shield, and remove the tank straps around the tank. Lower the tank to the ground with a floor jack.

Lift the new fuel tank up under the Grand Prix's trunk with a floor jack. Connect the fuel pump/gauge sending unit wires back to the fuel tank. Attach the fuel pump ground strap to hold the sending unit in place.

Connect both fuel tank retaining straps to keep the fuel tank close the car's body. Re-install the fuel tank shield at the top of the fuel tank, securing it with plastic pushpins at each end of the shield. Make sure the pushpins are tightly in before going any further.

Install the exhaust pipe to the left of the rear right wheel. Attach the fuel feed, the vapor return line and the filler neck hose to the top of the fuel tank. Connect the vent tubes to the top rear of the fuel tank with the other wires and hoses. Plug in the electrical connector for the fuel pump and the fuel gauge sending unit at the front of the fuel tank to activate it.

Empty the fuel from the gas container into your fuel tank's drain. Then, cover the fuel tank with the fuel tank filler cap to restore fuel pressure to your Grand Prix. Activate your car's battery by plugging in the negative battery terminal cable.

Check your car for any loose wiring or leaks. If there are no leaks, start your Pontiac and let it run for a few minutes. Take your car for a short drive to test your engine to make sure it's running smoothly.

Items you will need

  • Siphoning hose

  • Fuel container

  • Screwdriver

  • Floor jack

How to Install a Fuel Tank in a Honda CR-V

Unplug the cable from the negative battery terminal to avoid any electrical discharge as you work on your Honda. Drain any remaining fuel from the tank into a separate fuel container by using the fuel pump/sending unit. Also remove the fuel filler neck cover and hose as well as the fuel tank vapor hose. Inspect the hoses for any type of damage before going further; you'll need to replace any hoses that are damaged.

Use a floor jack to hold the fuel tank when you're ready to take it out. Unfasten the retaining straps and move them away from the CR-V's fuel tank. Lower the fuel tank to the ground and onto a firm surface such as a flat wooden board.

Put in the replacement tank under the car's trunk and fasten the tank straps onto the new fuel tank. Inspect the straps to make sure they're on tight enough before completing installation.

Secure the fuel filler neck hose and fuel tank vapor hoses. Attach the fuel filler neck cover to firmly lock the tank into place. Connect the negative battery terminal cable again and slowly refill the fuel tank with gas.

Test how your CR-V runs once installation is complete. Allow your car time to idle before leaving your driveway. After a few minutes, take your Honda for a spin to see if it runs well with its new fuel tank.

How to Install a Fuel Tank in a Chevy Cobalt

Drain the fuel tank of gasoline in a receptacle. Make sure the container can hold a combustible liquid. Look for a drain cock-some fuel tanks have one.

Twist the drain cock to loosen the valve-this allows the gas to completely drain from the fuel tank.

Find where the three fuel lines connect to the fuel tank and remove them. There will be gasoline in the lines, so have a wide mouth container to catch the excess gasoline. You need to find the supply line, the fill tube line and the vent line.

Search for the clamps on the two metal straps that hold the fuel tank in place under the Cobalt. Place blocks under the fuel tank so when the straps loosen, the tank doesn't fall on you.

Turn the nuts at one end of the straps and let them drop the tank on their own. Gravity will work in your favor if you let it.

Push the new fuel tank onto the blocks and refasten the straps with new nuts. If the straps are rusty, you can replace them at the same time. Reverse the removal of the fuel tank.

Maintain safety at all times, but especially when you pour the gasoline into the new tank. Start your car and let it run for a few minutes before you take it onto the highway. Check to make sure the gas leak is resolved.

Items you will need

  • Fire extinguisher

  • New fuel tank

  • Wrench set

  • Screwdriver set

  • Ratchet set

  • Hose clamps
