Removing Spring Clips From a Weight Distribution Hitch

Removing Spring Clips From a Weight Distribution Hitch thumbnail
Weight distribution hitches are used with trailers with high tongue weights.

A weight distribution hitch is used with trailers that have a high tongue (hitch point) weight. The hitch distributes some of the weight farther forward on the tow vehicle, so the hitch itself is not so low to the ground. The hitch is an assembly of weight distribution bars -- also known as spring bars -- held together with chains and coupling pins. The coupling pins are held in place by spring clips that are essentially large cotter-style safety pins that prevent the larger coupling pins from working loose. In order to safely remove the spring clips from a weight distribution hitch, all weight must be removed from the spring bars.

Instructions

    • 1

Block both the front and rear tires of the trailer with wheel blocks to prevent the wheels from rolling.

    • 2

Uncouple the safety chains, electrical and brake cables so they will be out of your way and not become entangled in the spring bars or chain supports.

    • 3

Raise the hitch until the weight is released from the weight distribution spring bars and their support chains become slack.

    • 4

Pull the spring clips free from the pins on the chain bracket.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be certain the rating of your weight distribution hitch is high enough to handle the weight of your trailer.
