How to Make Press Kit Music Online

A press kit is an important component of any musician or band's public relations and marketing strategy. In the past, this meant assembling a packet of band photos, a short bio, a physical CD and printouts of any press your band has received. Now that the majority of the music industry has gone digital, your press kit can be paperless. Electronic press kits allow you to assemble all of your band's promotional materials and distribute them by email to a wide audience with no postage due.

Instructions

    • 1

Write a short bio for your band or music project. The bio should only be about 200 words, and include the major accomplishments of your band. This includes anything from any popular bands or acts your band has shared the stage with, as well as a short description of the music you've released independently, or with a record label. If possible, have a professional music writer write and edit the bio.

    • 2

Set up a band photo shoot with a professional photographer. If you don't have access to, or can't afford a professional photo shoot, take the photo yourself. Keep in mind that the photo should be high-resolution (300 dpi or better).

    • 3

Upload your latest CD or recording to your computer. Or, if you have not recorded anything in a while, assemble all of your best tracks, and convert them to MP3s on you computer. Be sure to include music that has received favorable press.

    • 4

Assemble as many press clippings related to your band, as possible. This can be anything from an album review, show review to interviews with popular music blogs, or local independent weekly papers. If some of your best clips are not available online, try to locate the actual press clips, and scan them onto your computer.

    • 5

Save all documents as PDF files, and any photos as JPEG files. Create a folder for your press kit on your desktop, and move the bio, press clippings, photos and MP3 files to this folder. Name this folder "Press Kit" or "EPK." Compress or "zip" this folder. This compresses all files to a smaller size for easy uploading and distribution.

Tips & Warnings
