How to PING a Hard Drive Clone
Partimage Is Not Ghost, or PING, which is a backup and restoration program used on Linux computers, can restore a hard drive clone as if it were a hard drive. PING does not work on Widows or Macs, only Linux. PING is used as an alternative to DOS or Ghost and allows you the possibility of deleting the system administrator's password while you reboot the hard drive. PING is available for free on the Internet.

Download and install PING (see Resources).

Open the disc tray of the computer and insert a DVD-R. Double-click on Linux program "Nero." Click "Recorder" and scroll to "Burn Image." Browse through the files to locate "PING.-2.01.iso" and press "OK." Allow the DVD to burn.

Press and hold the power switch to turn off the computer. Allow the computer to remain off for about 30 seconds. Press the power switch to turn the computer on.

Click "CD-ROM Drive" at the "Boot Menu." Press "Enter" at the windows. Choose whether the computer should go to "Reboot," "Root" or "Shutdown" after the backup finishes. Press "OK."

Click on the partitions you wish to save at the next window. Press "OK." Click on the location where you wish to save PING at the next window. Click "OK." Continue following the instructions on the installation prompt.

Type your IP address into the pop-up window that reads "Enter your IP Address." Enter your Netmask and Gateway at the next two windows. Continue following the windows' instructions. At the list of available images, select "Create New Image." Type "\PartImage\System_20070624" into the box that reads "Enter the name of the image." Press "OK."
