How to Cover a Book With Vinyl

How to Cover a Book With Vinyl thumbnail
A vinyl cover protects your books.

Covering a book with vinyl not only protects it, but also enables you to decorate the cover to express your personality or the contents of the book. A vinyl cover will keep your book pages dry, and you can wipe any stains and spots off vinyl with a damp rag. Cover a book with vinyl at home following a few steps.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the dimensions of your book. Start at the left edge of the book cover and measure across the spine to the right edge. Add 4 inches to this measurement for the flaps. Measure also from the top of the book to the bottom, and add 1 inch to this number for the seam allowance.

    • 2

Cut out the vinyl to your measurements, using scissors or a ruler and a rotary cutter. Place the vinyl on a flat surface with the wrong side facing up. Fold 2 inches of the left side of the vinyl in and smooth down the crease. Repeat this for the right-hand-side flap.

    • 3

Sew across the top of the left flap using a short, zigzag stitch on a sewing machine. There is a 1/2-inch seam allowance at the top and at the bottom of the vinyl. If the vinyl is too thick, sew it by hand, using a thimble to help pull the needle through the vinyl. In the same way, sew across the bottom of the left-hand flap. Repeat this for the right-hand flap at the top and bottom.

    • 4

Place the left cover of the book in the left flap, and then the right cover in the right flap. You may need to bend the book a little at the spine to make it fit in.

Tips & Warnings

  • Instead of sewing, use a solvent-based glue made for vinyl. Duct tape will also hold the vinyl together.

  • Decorate your book cover with stickers or by gluing on beads. You can also glue on any drawings you have done or shapes cut out of foam sheets.
