How to Attach Shutters to Vinyl

Installing shutters on the windows of your house accents the house like nothing else can. If the house has vinyl siding on it, special attention must be paid when installing shutters. The vinyl, while it is durable against the weather, is not good for securing screws. The shutters can be secured with an adhesive, but that will make it harder to remove them for cleaning and maintenance. The shutters are best secured with long screws that will reach the wood under the vinyl siding.

Things You'll Need

• 2 1/2-inch galvanized screws
• Cordless drill
• Driver bit
• Pencil

Instructions

1. Hold the shutter up to the side of the window so it is evenly centered on the window. There should be an equal amount of space on the top and the bottom of the window.

2. Mark the screw holes of the shutter on the vinyl siding with a pencil. Make the marks dark enough that you will be able to see them. Place the shutters on the ground.

3. Insert the screws through the siding and into the wood below using a cordless drill with a driver bit. Hold the drill at a ninety degree angle to the house to ensure the holes are straight. Insert the screws until you feel them drive into the wood and then remove them. Doing this will make it easier to insert the screws when installing the shutters.

4. Place the shutter back up on the siding and align it to the holes you drilled.

5. Insert the screws through the shutters and into the siding using the cordless drill with the driver bit. Only tighten the screws enough to secure the shutters. Do not over-tighten them.
