How to Build a Simple Bed Frame
A simple bed frame carries several advantages over more ornate models. It's less expensive while performing the primary design function just as well. It's easier to build. It gives a room a clean, modern feel through its low-profile appearance. One of the simplest bed frames is a rail-supported platform frame consisting of just four components. Set aside one to two hours to build this kind of bed frame. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- 3 wooden beams, 2 inches by 18 inches by 80 inches
- Plywood sheet, 1/2 inch by 60 inches by 80 inches
- Wood screws, 1 inch long
- Power drill with screwdriver bits
- Sandpaper
Instructions

1
Lay the three beams next to each other on a flat, stable surface. The outside edges of the outermost beams should be 60 inches apart. The inside beam should be centered between the outside beams. All three beams should rest on their 2-inch-wide edges.
-
2
Set the plywood sheet on top of the three beams so that it covers the top edges. The 80-inch edges of the plywood should be flush with the outside faces of the beams.

-
3
Screw the plywood in position. Drill a line of 10 evenly spaced wood screws along the midline of each beam. If you have trouble keeping the beams balanced on their narrow edges during this step, focus on one beam at a time. Leave the others lying down until you need them.
-
4
Sand the top face of the plywood and the outside faces of the two outside beams. Use rough-grit sandpaper, and sand until you're confident splinters aren't a risk.
-
5
Move your finished frame into position where you want your bed to be.

Tips & Warnings
These directions are for a queen size frame. You can use them for beds of other sizes by altering the dimensions. For full and twin size frames, you don't need to use a center rail. They're narrow enough that sagging isn't an issue.
