How to Promote Ecotourism

Travelers enjoy zip lining through the mountains.

Ecotourism is environmentally sustainable travel to natural areas. Eco-travelers seek to travel with little impact to the environment, provide a positive experience for the locals, spend their dollars toward conservation and financially empower the local people and their culture, rather than replace it. Many private land owners in the United States offer ecotourism on their lands, which helps to fuel the local economy. Promoting ecotourism on one's property or in a state requires establishing a website, joining The International Tourism Society and coordinating with the state tourism board.

Instructions

    • 1

Join The International Ecotourism Society (TIES). Members receive a profile on Ecotourism Explorer, a interactive network for members, discounts to promote their business, a listing in the TIES publication Travel Green Guide and use of the society's logo for promotional use.

    • 2

Establish a website for your business. Exhibit photographs of the natural beauty in which the adventure will take place. Fall leaves or crisp clear waters of creeks and rivers are sure to attract visitors. A website will provide free advertising as search engine traffic is driven to your site.

    • 3

Advertise through the state and local tourism boards to advocate ecotourism on your property or in your area. State and local tourism boards promote regional attractions via Internet, printed material and television advertising.

    • 4

Sponsor a local or national charity event to bring awareness to ecotourism on your property. Offer a prize for one free night or weekend through a drawing to enhance awareness and showcase accommodations, activities and food.

    • 5

Contact a national newspaper or bridal magazine to offer a free weekend with airfare to showcase the property in the next publication. Provide the nicest room available. Take the reporter on a personal tour around the property. Allow the reporter to experience what any guest will experience.
