Outdoor carpet adds a decorative element to cement porches and patios, but the flooring is also affected by weather, which could result in algae formation. Wet and humid conditions can cause algae to spout and spread quickly in an outdoor carpet. The mossy, green slime can deteriorate an outdoor carpet if not removed properly. Remove algae from outdoor carpet with items that kill the fungus and disinfect the flooring.
Step 1
Remove all furniture and other items from the carpet. Place removable outdoor carpet in direct sunlight. Leave the carpet for three to four hours to allow the sun time to kill the algae. Sweep the dead algae from the carpet with a broom. If you cannot move the outdoor carpet, sweep as much of the algae from the flooring as possible.

Step 2
Mix 2 tbsp. liquid laundry detergent into a bucket of water. Wet a soft-bristle brush with the cleaning mixture.
Step 3
Scrub the outdoor carpet with the brush, killing and removing any remaining algae left in the rug.
Step 4
Rinse the detergent from the carpet with a garden hose. Start at one end of the carpet and begin spraying slowly back and forth, working your way to the opposite end. Remove all traces of the soap.
Step 5
Lay the carpet in the sun to dry. For unmovable outdoor carpet, press old towels onto the rug to remove excess water or use a wet/dry vacuum.
