How to Participate in Online Debates
The rapid growth of the Internet has opened up a wide range of methods in which people can communicate with one another. Individuals that were previously separated by culture, geography, or language are now able to engage each other in one-on-one and group debates. You can engage in an online debate on any website with a comments section, but if you are looking for substantial debate as opposed to name-calling and profanity, you may wish to stick with an online debate site.

1
Consider your argument. Make a well-constructed and carefully thought-out argument, not a knee-jerk reaction to something you just read. Think about whether what you want to say adds to the debate with meaningful points backed by facts.
-
2
Act politely. You are going to meet people that disagree with you, but most of these people have just as many reasons for their beliefs as you do for yours. Debating these issues politely helps both of you to consider your ideas from the perspective of another.

3
Join an online debate community. There are several websites dedicated to providing users with an opportunity to engage in both formal and informal debates on a wide range of topics. Conversations on sites of this nature are normally monitored to ensure the debate is conducted appropriately.
-
4
Brush up on your grammar and proofreading skills. You do not have to be a spelling bee champion to engage in a debate, but making simple mistakes will lessen the impact of your argument. At the very least, run a spell-checker over your argument and read it once or twice to spot trouble areas.
-
5
Back up your statements with facts, if possible. Your point of view is strengthened when you can augment it with documentable evidence that it is correct. While this may not be appropriate for all topics, you should use verified facts whenever you can.
