Make Frayed Rosettes With Rolled Fabric

Rolled fabric rosettes are fabric flowers made by twisting and rolling a strip of fabric. The way to make a rolled fabric rosette that also has frayed edges is to exposes the raw edges of the fabric strip during the rolling process. The best way to do this is to fold the strip of fabric so the raw edges are always visible. From there, you can easily roll the fabric into a rosette that is useful for embellishing different craft projects.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a strip of fabric 3 inches wide by 20 inches long. This will make a 2-inch rosette.

    • 2

Fold the fabric in half lengthwise with the printed side facing in. Iron the fold. Open the fold. Fold the fabric in thirds by placing the raw edges of the fabric to the center fold line. Make sure to fold the edges of the fabric over the printed side of the fabric. If you do not, the edges of the rosette will not be frayed.

    • 3

Iron the folds down. Fold the strip in half lengthwise again so the raw edges are exposed. Iron the fold.

    • 4

Fold down one corner of the strip and sew the fold in place with a needle and thread. Roll the fabric a little and sew the roll in place.

    • 5

Turn the fabric 90 degrees. Roll the fabric over and twist slightly. Sew the roll to the previous roll. Make an additional 90-degree turn and fold the fabric around the center of the rosette. Stitch the fabric in place.

    • 6

Continue the process for the rest of the strip. After each 90-degree turn, roll the fabric slightly to achieve the rolled look. Stitch each roll and turn in place for stability.

    • 7

Sew the last few petals to the bottom of the rosette rather than the previous roll of fabric. This will make it look like a flower rather than a rug or just a piece of rolled fabric.

    • 8

Sew a button or bead to the center of the rosette for decoration if desired. You can also leave the rosette plain.
