How to Use a Farouk CHI

The Farouk CHI line of hair straighteners is a well-known collection of flat irons for professional and consumer use. CHI, which stands for Cationic Hydration Interlink, uses ceramic plates in its straighteners and uses ionic charges to repel moisture from hair, lessen frizz and create a longer-lasting style. The selection and use of these professional-grade products, however, can be overwhelming for the average user. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Preparation

    • 1

Select the Farouk CHI best suited for your hair length and texture. Each product has its own benefits and uses, so it is recommended to browse all of the irons on the CHI "Tools" Web page.

    • 2

Apply heat protector spray of your choice to your hair, according to product instructions. Let your hair dry.

    • 3

Pre-heat your CHI straightener. Use the lowest setting possible that works on your hair to prevent damage. Most irons use a blinking light, flashing temperature or other signal to show they have reached the desired temperature. Consult your CHI's manual to determine how your iron signals that it is ready to use.

Separate hair into several layers, clipping all layers except the bottom one to the top of the head. The number of layers will vary depending on how thick your hair is. For thin hair, you will likely need less than five. For thick hair, you may need more than 10.

    Operation/Use

    • 5

Start with the bottom layer and select a section of hair 1-1/2 inches wide. Clamp the CHI closed as close to the roots of the hair as possible and slide it down the shaft of the hair in a slow, even movement. Do not leave the iron in one place too long; this will create a crimped mark. Move the iron steadily. The section of hair should be perfectly straight; if not, repeat the movement until the section is straight. Curl the hair under or out at the end of the layer if you want a bobbed or flipped style.

    • 6

Move on to the next section of bottom-layer hair in a continuous pattern; do not skip any sections. For example, start at one ear and circle your head until you reach the other.

    • 7

Pull down the next layer from the clip and repeat. Repeat with each layer until all hair is straight.

    • 8

Finish with a soft-hold hairspray of your choice, if desired.
