Instructions

    • 1

Scrape up anything stuck to the floor using a putty knife. Clean the floor surface with a de-greasing cleanser. Allow the floor to dry thoroughly.

    • 2

Prepare the floor for the first coat of paint. Lightly sand both linoleum and wood floors with a fine-grit sand paper. Use concrete patch to repair any cracks or flaws on a concrete floor. Vacuum the floor after the final preparation to remove any dust and particles from sanding.

    • 3

Prime the floor surface with a primer designed for your floor's surface. Use a paint roller to cover the entire floor. Allow the first coat to dry for one hour and apply a second coat of primer to the floor. Allow the floor primer to dry overnight.

    • 4

Apply your first coat of floor paint. Use the lighter of your two colors to cover the entire floor. Let the first floor coat to dry overnight and apply a second coat to the floor. Let the floor dry for 24 hours.

    • 5

Measure the length and the width of your room to find the center. Do not include any cabinetry; only measure from wall to wall. Mark the center point on each wall. Snap horizontal and vertical chalk lines across the floor to establish the center of the floor. Use a T-square to confirm your center lines are straight.

    • 6

Measure the distance equal to the size squares you want on your floor from the center horizontal and vertical lines. Use the chalk line to snap the additional lines on the floor.

    • 7

Apply painter's tape along the chalk lines to mark each square. Verify the measurements of your squares to confirm each square is of equal size.

    • 8

Paint every other square with your darkest paint color using a hand held roller. Begin with the squares in the center of the room and work your way to the walls. Allow the first coat of floor paint to dry overnight then apply a second coat to the squares. Allow the painted floor squares to dry for 24 hours.

Peel the painter's tape for the floor. Roll on a coat of high-traffic polyurethane to seal the floor. Allow the polyurethane to dry overnight. Apply a second coat of polyurethane and allow the floor to dry for 24 hours.
