How to Add Milliseconds to Microseconds

How to Add Milliseconds to Microseconds thumbnail
Microseconds and milliseconds both exist in the change of a single second.

Much can happen in a single second: races are won, records are broken and lives begin. Milliseconds (ms) and microseconds (µs) are metric time measurement units that partition a second. They are separated by powers of ten, much like meters and millimeters are separated. Adding milliseconds to microseconds requires that you know the conversion factor needed to switch them into equivalent units.

Instructions

    • 1

Multiply the amount of time in milliseconds by 1,000 to calculate that amount in microseconds. For example, suppose you are adding 20 ms to 100 µs. Multiplying 20 by 1,000 results in 20,000 µs.

    • 2

Add the amount of time converted from milliseconds to microseconds to the other amount of microseconds in step 1. For this example, 20,000 added to 100 equals 20,1000 µs.

    • 3

Divide that amount by 1,000 to convert the amount into milliseconds. For this example, 20,100 µs divided by 1,000 equals 20.1 ms.
