How to Recycle Used Fryer Oil

Once you are done with your fryer, you may find yourself wondering what to do with the oil that was left behind. You can't just pour it down the sink because it could clog up your pipes or damage your septic tank. Both of which, would be costly in repairs. If you have a small amount, such as enough to fit in a coffee can, you can throw it out with your trash. For larger quantities of fryer oil, you will need to recycle it.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your local solid waste authority or other local recycling center and find out the days and times you can bring them the oil and whether or not there is a charge. You can locate their number in the phone book or online.

    • 2

Put the used fryer oil into a spare container that you don't mind getting rid of. When you drop off the oil, you will be dropping off the container it's in and will most likely not be able to get it back.

    • 3

Lay old towels down in your car where you plan to put the oil. A good place to put your oil is on the floor in the front passenger area of the car. This space is compact enough that the oil will not roll around.

    • 4

Gently place the container of oil on top of the old towels. To make sure that the container doesn't accidentally spill when going over bumps or making sharp turns, pack additional old towels around the container.

    • 5

Drive the container of used fryer oil to the solid waste authority and drop it off. When you are there, consider touring the facility so you can see where your used fryer oil will go and what it will be used for.

Tips & Warnings

  • In some cities, the solid waste authority or recycling center may pick up the oil for you if you have a large amount.
