How to Rip DVDs Into a Media Center

The DVD, or digital video disc, is the most common media type for movies and digital video today. With its widespread support from manufacturers, DVD players and computer DVD drives are inexpensive. If you have a DVD drive, free space on your hard drive and a DVD ripping program, you can rip DVDs to your media center computer for playback through a compatible media player, such as the Windows Media Player program included with Microsoft Windows operating systems.

      Insert the desired DVD into your computer's DVD drive and close the disc tray.

      Open your DVD ripping software program and wait for your DVD to load in the program. If it doesn't automatically begin loading, select your DVD drive as the DVD source from the drop-down menu. Once your DVD has loaded, select the location on your hard drive for it to be ripped to and begin the process.

      Play your ripped DVD by opening up the desired media center program, such as Windows Media Player, clicking the "File" menu, selecting "Open" and then choosing the "VIDEO_TS.IFO" file from the DVD rip files. Your DVD begins playing in the program.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ripping homemade DVDs to your computer is perfectly fine, but do not rip commercial DVDs without the written permission from the intellectual property owners.
