Make sure your Emerald Green arborvitae tree gets enough water. If your rainfall has been minimal and the tree is turning brown, saturate the tree's base with water from a hose. Water the tree until the water begins to form a puddle at the base.

Search each tree for dead interior branches and remove them with your hands. This dead material can accumulate over time and result in dead exterior branches. If you can't reach the dead branches, use a hose to spray the dead material out of the tree.

Spray the tree with horticultural oil if spider mites are found. A spider mite infestation can kill the tree. Spray the entire tree with the oil to kill the infestation. If you think your tree is at risk of a spider mite infestation, you can also apply horticultural oil to prevent infestations.

To check your tree for spider mites, shake one of the branches over a white piece of paper. Mites are very small and move slowly.
