How to Adjust the PH in a Pool thumbnail
The correct pH balance helps to reduce redness in your eyes when swimming.

Nature likes to balance the pH level of water to 8.5. This is a bit high for swimming pools. You can adjust the pH balance of your swimming pool with muriatic acid or sodium bisulphate. Use a high quality pH balance tester available at most pool supply retailers. Purchase one that tells you how much acid to use in order to lower the pH level to between 7.0 and 7.6. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a bucket of water ¾ full and add the required amount of acid to the bucket of water. The test kit will tell you how much to use based on the size of your pool. If you do not have a tester that tells you how much to add, simply add a cup to two cups at one time.

    • 2

Pour the water into the deep end of the pool and allow the water to cycle through the filters for four hours.

    • 3

Retest the water pH level with your test kit and repeat Steps 1 and 2 if your reading is still above 7.6.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take your time and add the acid slowly. It is easier to lower the pH balance than it is to remove acid from the water.

  • Make sure no one is in the pool while you add the acid or for the four hours between testing.
