How to Set Independent Drills in Volleyball

How to Set Independent Drills in Volleyball thumbnail
Individual volleyball drills can help any player improve her game.

If you are a volleyball coach, you may want to set independent drills for some of your players while others are working on team drills or you may want to have players practice skills on their own time when they aren't able to attend practice. If you're a player, you might want to use independent volleyball drills to help improve your skills when you have some extra time or are not able to practice with your team.

Instructions

    • 1

Have the middle player practice slides in a simple independent drill called slide, toss and hit. While holding the ball, the middle hitter should start in the base hitting position and then proceed to slide toward where the setter would be and then slide along the net. Have the middle hitter toss the ball to herself and approach the ball to hit it.

    • 2

On one side of the court, either mark off the four corners of the court with tape or place chairs in each of the corners. Have your outside hitter stand on the opposite side of the court. Have the player toss the ball high to herself and hit the ball with the intention of hitting the ball into a specific corner. Have the player repeat the drill until she can hit each corner consistently.

    • 3

Set up one side of the court similar to how it was set up in Step 2, but this time place one rubber cone in each of the four corners. Have a player work on her serves by positioning her on the opposite side of the court with a ball. The goal is to knock down each of the four cones. Have the player reset the cones and repeat the drill until she can consistently hit the target and knock down the cone.
