Be available and approachable, so the rebellious child can talk to you.

Children rebel against their parents at all ages of life, even as early as six months old. Most children enter a rebellious period during their teenage years, which can be difficult for some parents to handle. Because children are growing and changing throughout these years, it is common for teens to act out or rebel against their parents. Dealing with a rebellious child can be difficult, but there are some important things to remember if your child is rebelling against you.

Instructions

    • 1

Educate yourself about the teenage years and what your child will be going through. Understanding where your child is coming from is a huge step toward getting along well with your changing teen.

    • 2

Talk to your children early about the changes they will experience during their teenage years. Once these changes in their mind and body begin to happen, it is too late to start talking about them. Talking early allows you to be the go-to person when they have questions or concerns.

    • 3

Show you children that you love and care for them. Explain that rules you make are for their safety and they will be less likely to rebel against your rules. Children that know they are loved and cared for are less likely to be rebellious during difficult times.

    • 4

Listen to your child. If they break a rule, ask for the reason and then listen. There may be times when your child has a reason for coming home late or breaking a rule that was out of their control. Punishing them at these times can make them feel like they don't have a say, and it may increase their rebellious tendencies.

    • 5

Praise your child for positive actions and accomplishments. This will give them more incentive to continue doing positive things. Punishing them for negative actions or nagging at them to do things doesn't motivate them to do better.
