How to Get Involved With the New York City Marathon

The New York City Marathon is more than a race; it's an opportunity for thousands of runners, spectators, volunteers and city agencies to share in a memorable experience.

  1. Step 1

    Come out and cheer the 30,000 runners. If you are anywhere near New York City, you can join two million other spectators in any of the five boroughs.

  2. Step 2

    Consider volunteering. Check for volunteer opportunities on the New York Road Runners Club Web site (nyrr.org).

  3. Step 3

    Help out informally. You can bring out the family, bring orange slices to pass out to grateful runners or just cheer encouragement.

  4. Step 4

    Watch the race on television. Check your local listings.

  5. Step 5

    Follow the race on the New York City Marathon Web site (nycmarathon.org).

  6. Step 6

    Tune into area radio broadcasts on stations WCBS, WINS, WABC and WFAN.

  7. Step 7

    Check out future corporate sponsorship opportunities.

  8. Step 8

    Attend the Start-to-Finish Banquet at the Tavern on the Green restaurant, located at the marathon finish line.

  9. Step 9

    Inquire about escorting a disabled runner. Contact the Achilles Track Club (achillestrackclub.org) for more information.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take aim at running a marathon. If not New York, then get ready for one of the many other 26.2-mile events held worldwide.
  • Volunteer at any other race. Help is always appreciated.
