How to Remove the Lock From a Schlage Entrance Lock

Schlage is a trusted name in both home and commercial security. The company offers a wide variety of locks, ranging from standard deadbolts to lock boxes to electronic locks that are opened by combination. You can remove the lock cylinder from a a Schlage entrance lock if you need to replace or rekey the lock. The process can be done fairly quickly and doesn't require any specialized locksmithing tools.

Things You'll Need

• Masking tape
• Phillips screwdriver

Instructions

1. Unlock the Schlage entrance lock by either turning the bolt handle to the left, or opening the entrance lock with a key.

2. Place a piece of masking tape across the exterior face of the Schlage entrance lock.

3. Open the door where the Schlage entrance lock is mounted. Place a doorstop or block of wood between the door and the frame so that it doesn't close accidentally.

4. Stand on the inside of the door. Locate the two screws on the back of the Schlage entrance look. Unscrew these with a Phillips screwdriver.

5. Pull the rear face of the Schlage lock out of the door.

6. Remove the masking tape from the front face of the Schlage entrance lock and remove it from the door.

Tips & Warnings

• Use a paint scraper, if needed, to remove any paint from the outside of the Schlage entrance lock.
