How to Make Nonsprouting Bird Seed
Bird seed can attract different types of wild birds to your property. Unfortunately, birds are messy eaters, and squirrels knock bird seed on the ground, as well. When the seed lies on the ground, uneaten, it can sprout. This sprouting can lead to a number of wild plants and weeds growing on your property. However, you can prevent unwanted plant growth by making your own nonsprouting bird seed. Does this Spark an idea?

Baking to Prevent Sprouting
-
1
Place the bird seed on a large baking sheet. The seed should be in a thin layer. Depending on the size of the baking sheet and the amount of seed you are preparing, you may need two sheets. When choosing bird seed, you can use a commercial brand or you can make your own.

2
Bake the bird seed in a 300-degree oven for 20 minutes. Carefully remove the baking sheet from the oven and allow the bird seed to cool completely. Cooling generally takes an hour, but it depends on the type of seed you are using. Baking the seed keeps it from germinating.

Tips & Warnings
Always check your bird seed for mold before use. Do not use moldy bird seed.
You can mix in other tasty treats to your bird seed, such as dried fruits and nuts. However, wait to add the fruit until after the bird seed has cooled.
Use a bird feeder that prevents water from entering it, which will keep unbaked bird seed from sprouting in the feeder.
