How to Chain Pokemon in "Pokemon Platinum"

In the Pokemon universe, "chaining" is the process of using the PokeRadar to repeatedly encounter and battle a certain species of Pokemon, thus creating a "chain." The purpose of a chain is to maximize the chances of encountering an alternatively colored, or "shiny," Pokemon. Once a chain reaches 40, the chance of encountering a shiny Pokemon increases fourfold. Knowledge of the game's chaining mechanics helps greatly in creating and maintaining a chain.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy as many Max Repels as you can afford from a Poke Mart. Put a high level Pokemon with a reliable, high-PP attack at the front of your party and walk into an area of tall grass.

    • 2

Use the PokeRadar followed by a Max Repel and walk into a patch of shaking grass. Reset the PokeRadar by walking 50 steps and reuse it until you encounter the Pokemon you wish to chain. Defeat the Pokemon in battle to start a chain.

    • 3

Reset the PokeRadar by walking back and forth near the center of the area of tall grass. Reuse the PokeRadar and defeat the Pokemon in the patch of shaking grass farthest from your current location. Repeat until the chain is maximized at 40, using Max Repels as necessary.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid walking north, as the trainer sprite blocks your view of the grass in front of you.

  • Use the Step Counter Poketch app to track your 50 steps per reset and avoid wasting Max Repels.

  • Do not turn off the Nintendo DS in the middle of a chain; this will reset the chain to zero.

  • Fleeing from a PokeRadar battle will reset the chain to zero.

  • Avoid shaking patches that are not surrounded by more grass in the four cardinal directions, as they have a high chance of breaking your chain.
