How to Install a Violin Chin Rest
The chin rest helps you support your instrument, allowing you to play more difficult pieces. Once not considered necessary for the violinist, most modern violins have a chin rest, and that chin rest can be as individual as the player. Whether custom-made or assembly-line-made, the chin rest must properly fit both you and your instrument for the best comfort and sound.

1
Position your violin as you normally play it. Check in a mirror to see where your chin lands when you turn and nod your head. If it naturally positions itself in the middle, you'll need a chin rest with a cup at the center. If it positions to the left, select a chin rest with a cup to the left.

2
Position the chin rest over the tailpiece of the violin, referencing the individual chin piece manufacturer's instruction manual. Tighten the clamps gradually until they fit snugly on the instrument.

3
Play your violin with the newly installed chin rest. If your neck twists at all, adjust the rest until it fits comfortably.
