Many homes have rooms that blend into each other without a separation wall, such as a living room/dining room combination. You can make these rooms seem more like two separate rooms if you employ a divider screen. These come in many styles to suit not only your decorating needs, but your budget as well. Additionally, by carefully arranging the furniture and working with your color combinations, you will enhance the visual divide between the two sides of the room. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Find a screen that goes with your decorating style. If you've decorated with Japanese style, look for a sliding screen. A home that features a modern design would be a good place for a folding screen made of industrial materials such as metal or plastic. Whatever screen you choose, it should look like it belongs.

2
Divide the room with color on the different sides of the screen. This will enhance the dividing line created by the screen itself. For example, if you've used the screen to divide an all-in-one dining and living room, feature two different colors in each area, such as red and yellow. You can tie the rooms together visually without them losing their individuality by featuring accents of each color in the other room. You might even paint the screen the two colors, featuring one color on each side.

Experiment with lighting and accessories. Floor lights placed in front of the screen give you extra lighting and serve to make the screen stand out. Place decorative items such as plants, a small decorative table or a steamer trunk in front of the screen. These items visually reinforce the screen, because they provide "weight" at the bottom part of the screen.

Think about how you can effectively use the screen. Ask yourself if it's sturdy enough for mini-shelves, or can you employ a photo screen? These types of elements help to make the screen more like a wall.

5
Position the furniture in a way that maximizes the screen's purpose. For example, if your living room is behind one side of the screen, arrange the furniture in such a way that it reinforces the separate room quality. Lay down a large throw rug and position the couch, chairs and coffee tables around the rug. If you scoot the couch up close to the screen, it'll seem more like a wall.
