How to Dye Wool for the Peace Rose
The peace rose is one of the most common types of garden roses, known for being very easy to grow in a variety of different climates. You can create the peace rose by sewing a piece of wool in a certain way to make the petals of the rose. You can then sew or pin these little roses to clothing or fabric. Dying wool to match the color of your favorite color of peace rose is extremely easy, as long as you are using white wool.
Things You'll Need
- Packet powder acid dye
- 2 cups hot water
- Bowl
- Large pot
- Thermometer
- Stainless steel spoon
- 1/2 cup white vinegar
Instructions

1
Dissolve a packet of powder acid dye with 2 cups of hot water in a bowl. The powder dye needs to be completely dissolved before using. You can find acid dyes from any arts and craft store. Purchase red, pink or yellow dye to make the peace rose look more realistic.
-
2
Fill a large pot with water. You'll need at least 1 gallon of water, depending on how large your wool is.
-
-
3
Place the pot on your stove, and turn the heat to "Medium-High." Pour the dissolved powder dye into the pot.
-
4
Place a thermometer into the water. Allow the water to get up to -- but never exceeding -- 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Water hotter that 140 degrees can shrink the wool.
-
5
Place the wool fabric or clothing into the pot. Stir the fabric constantly for five minutes with a stainless steel spoon. Note that a non-stainless steel spoon will stain.
-
6
Pour 1/2 cup white vinegar into the pot. Continue to stir the fabric consistently for 30 to 45 minutes. If you want the peace rose to be light pink, red or yellow, only leave the wool into the water for 30 minutes. To achieve bright pink, red or yellow, leave the wool in the water for 45 minutes to an hour.
-
7
Rinse the dyed wool under cool water. When excess color no longer runs from the wool, you can remove it from the running, cool water.
-
8
Lay the wool fabric flat to dry.
