1
Collect 20 to 25 Basic Energy cards of one or two colors. Select the colors you use based on the Pokemon in your deck. If the majority of your Pokemon are dependent on green energy like Grimer or Seviper, most of the energy cards in the deck should be green.
-
2
Place duplicates of Basic Pokemon that you intend to evolve during a match. Evolved Pokemon are less common in decks than Basic Pokemon, so have four Basic to every two Evolved Pokemon. For example, a deck based around Nidoking should include four male Nidoran, two Nidorino and at least one Nidoking card. This helps you to evolve to stronger monsters more quickly during the match.

3
Fill out the rest of the deck with helpful Trainer and Item cards. These cards will apply useful bonuses to your Pokemon and can complement the natural strengths and weaknesses of the monsters you use.
-
4
Practice with other players to see what works and what doesn't. Do not be afraid to start from scratch if cards aren't working well with each other, or if you are regularly not getting the cards you need in your hand during the battle. Ask to look through a friend's collection and try to trade for cards you believe will better suit your deck.
