How to Repair Bumper Damage to Paint & Primer

The bumper on a car is a commonly damaged area. Whether the damage is a dent or ding from a collision or scrapes that cause damage to the paint and primer, it needs to be repaired properly. Many times, the ends and corners of bumpers will have scratches or scrapes that only damage the paint and primer. Sometimes the paint and primer may be completely scrapped off, leaving a black or yellow plastic color showing that needs to be covered.

Things You'll Need

• 400 grit sandpaper
• 800 grit sandpaper
• Water
• Spray primer
• Spray paint

Instructions

1. Use 400 grit sandpaper to lightly sand the damaged area and remove the surrounding paint and primer. Keep the sandpaper flat against the surface so that it is sanded evenly.

2. Spray a thick coat of primer over the sanded area. Keep the spray can six to eight inches from the surface and use even strokes. Allow the primer to dry for thirty minutes.

3. Sand the dried primer with 800 grit sandpaper and water, keeping the sandpaper soaking wet while sanding. This step smooths the primer and prepares the surface for paint. Rinse the area and allow it to dry completely.

4. Spray a total of three to five coats of paint over the sanded area, keeping the coats thin to avoid runs in the paint. Wait four hours before handling the area.
